If you've recently went into a computer shop, the most popular hard drive is SATA Hard Drive or Serial ATA Hard Drive. SATA Hard Drive is the latest hard drive technology after Parallel ATA or IDE Hard Drive and SCSI Hard Drive. This is not to say that you won't find IDE or SCSI hard drive but both hard drives are still available in most computer shops.

Serial ATA Hard Drive is a hard drive that used a high speed and performance Serial ATA as its connection. This is a result of continuous development as a successor to the old Advanced Technology Attachment or ATA and eventually will replace older technology mainly Parallel Advanced Technology Attachment (also known as IDE Hard Drive).

Serial ATA Hard Drive has high speed data transfer up to 3 Gb/s which is very good for high bandwidth applications such as video editing, graphic application, and gaming activities. For future development plans for SATA high speed data transfer includes 6.0 Gb/s standard. The main features of 6.0 Gb/s is allowing multiple drives to be connected to a single SATA port and shared the bandwidth with other drives. That would be a huge boost for pc users that expect more performance from 6.0 Gb/s standard.

The most significance differences between Serial ATA Hard Drive and Parallel ATA Hard Drive are the power and data cables. Serial ATA Hard Drive used a 7-pin Serial ATA data cable and can be up to 1 meter in length. It is connected to SATA socket on the motherboard but only one hard drive per SATA socket. Serial ATA data cable has a slim size that makes it more suitable for modern computing needs that saves space and all the clutters when using the old IDE connectors.
Meanwhile, the power cable for SATA Hard Drive is a 15-pin Serial ATA power connector. Most current computer power supply have Serial ATA power connectors but if you didn’t have one you can buy a cheap Serial ATA power convertor for the old IDE power connectors.

For the external storage usage, SATA Hard Drive used an external interface called External Serial Advanced Technology Attachment or eSATA. It competes with USB and Firewire to provide fast data transfers for external storage devices. eSata have higher transfer speed than both USB and Firewire but there are also drawback that is eSata need its own power connector. However, eSata is the best solution for high data transfer speed external storage.
