Stars, an indie-pop band from Montreal, released a new EP this Monday.

Sad Robots was first made public on their Myspace page with a link to sadrobots.ca, which at the time was a single page with the message “Are you a sad robot?”

The site went live soon after the announcement, and the EP is now available for $4 as a download, or $8 for a physical CD. For five songs, this seemed like a good deal to me, so I bought it. I’m a fan of Stars‘ last two releases: Set Yourself on Fire and In My Bedroom After The War, so I had high expectations for Sad Robots. The good news is they didn’t entirely let me down.

The first song on the EP, Maintenance Hall, 4am, is an intro track with hardly any vocals. It kind of stays the same for the entire two minutes, which is a bit boring. It reminds me of The Beginning After The End from IMBATW, but it seems a little unnecessary to have an intro for a five song EP. I think a better song could have replaced this one to make a more substantial album.

The album really starts with A Thread Cut With A Carving Knife - a slower song that reaches into the five minute range. It’s a tad uninteresting at parts, but the song really shines when Amy Millan starts singing. To be honest, most of my favourite parts of this album are when she’s singing. She has a great voice that really stands out of the mix and forces you to take notice. Nonetheless, this particular song seems to go on and on…

Thankfully, the music starts to pick up after the first two tracks. Undertow is a catchy song that’s a little more upbeat. Nothing near as poppy as certain songs from their last album, but that’s not a bad thing at all.

My favourite song out of the five is the live version of Going, Going, Gone (originally from 2001’s Nightsongs). It’s a fairly simple song with a really attractive melody. Both Amy and Tourquil Campbell sing very well on this track.

Next up, 14 Forever reminds me most of the band’s’ previous efforts - namely Set Yourself On Fire. It has a quality that’s very unique to a Stars song. The piano heavy intro even uses a fairly strange time-signature, which is a rare thing for the band.

Even though the first two songs from Sad Robots are a little hard to get into, the rest should prove to be Stars classics. It’s nice to see that the band is still making music, and I’m looking forward to hearing their next album.
